Tourism, Sport and Major Events Minister Steve Dimopoulos highlighted the event's significance, noting that 91,000 visitors attended the Grand Prix last year. The government has offered additional funding to the event's operator, MotoGP Sports Entertainment Group, to incentivise the continuation of the race at its traditional venue.
However, the exact amount of the financial offer has not been disclosed, and it remains unclear whether the operator has accepted the proposal. There have been indications that MotoGP Sports Entertainment Group is considering relocating the event to Melbourne's Albert Park, a move the state government opposes.
Bass Coast Mayor Rochelle Halstead expressed optimism about the government's efforts, emphasising the community's strong support for keeping the event at Phillip Island. A petition with over 4,000 signatures was submitted to the government last year, underscoring the local commitment to the Grand Prix.
The outcome of these negotiations will be crucial for the future of the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix and its continued presence at Phillip Island, a venue renowned for its rich motorsport heritage.
