ASX Takes a Hit Following Trump's Tariff Announcements

Investors reacted to Trump's decision to impose a 50 per cent tariff on copper and a 200 per cent tariff on imported pharmaceuticals. The President indicated that there might be a grace period of up to 18 months for these companies to establish operations within the United States. In response, copper futures fell by 2.4 per cent, triggering a sell-off in Australian copper mining stocks. Sandfire Resources saw a drop of 3.45 per cent, Capstone Copper fell by 3.03 per cent, and Evolution Mining, which involves both gold and copper, plunged 7.02 per cent.

Diversified mining companies showed relative resilience with BHP down 1.02 per cent to $37.85, and Rio Tinto slipping 0.55 per cent to $107.59. The healthcare sector experienced mixed results; CSL declined by 0.91 per cent while ResMed fell by 0.25 per cent. On the positive side, shares in Pro Medicus and Cochlear registered modest gains.
