The latest data points to a sharp change in how super is being used. Dental treatment was the largest medical category, with $892 million withdrawn in 2025-26 and a reported 13-fold increase since 2018-19. Applications approved for compassionate release fell by about 5 per cent from the previous year, but the dollar amount still edged higher, suggesting larger bills or more expensive treatments are continuing to drive the system.

Compassionate release can be legitimate and important. The rules allow early access in limited circumstances, including certain medical costs, palliative care, funeral expenses, disability-related modifications and preventing the forced sale of a home. Severe financial hardship is a separate pathway assessed by super funds, generally requiring strict income-support and living-cost tests. In both cases, early release is not intended to be a general savings account or a routine payment method.

The concern for regulators is that some providers and third-party facilitators appear to be steering vulnerable patients towards super access for high-cost procedures, including cases where the treatment may not meet the spirit of the rules. Warning signs include heavy social media promotion, pressure to act quickly, requests for personal details to lodge applications, fees linked to the application process, or a provider presenting super access as the main payment option without discussing alternatives.

For consumers, the practical question is not simply whether an application might be approved. It is whether the immediate benefit outweighs the long-term cost. Points to consider generally include:

  • whether the treatment is essential, time-sensitive and supported by appropriate medical evidence;
  • whether public, private health, payment plan or community support options have been explored;
  • how tax, Centrelink payments, insurance inside super and account balances may be affected;
  • what the withdrawal could mean for compound returns and retirement income over time.

Where the amount is significant, independent medical input and licensed financial advice may help clarify the trade-offs. The broader policy challenge is that superannuation is being asked to absorb pressure from healthcare affordability, household budgets and aggressive marketing. That makes careful checks essential before a short-term funding solution becomes a long-term retirement setback.
