The primary driver behind this decline is the resurgence of cost-of-living pressures. Households reported increased financial strain, with the sub-index tracking family finances compared to a year ago falling by 7.5%, and expectations for finances over the next 12 months dropping by 8.5%. These figures suggest that temporary relief measures, such as the earlier halving of the fuel excise, have had only a fleeting impact.

Matthew Hassan, Westpac's Head of Australian Macro-Forecasting, noted that cost-of-living issues have returned "with a vengeance" in June, leading to a reversal of the modest improvements observed in May. This sentiment reflects a cautious outlook among consumers, who are bracing for further financial challenges in the near future.

While views on personal finances have deteriorated, sentiment regarding the broader economy presents a mixed picture. Near-term concerns about the economy have eased slightly; however, expectations over the medium term have fallen to a three-year low. Additionally, unemployment expectations remain moderately elevated, indicating ongoing concerns about job security.

Housing sentiment has also been affected. The 'time to buy a dwelling' index rose by 12.6% to 81.1, suggesting a slight improvement in buyer sentiment. However, this figure remains well below the long-term average of 119. More notably, the house price expectations index dropped sharply by 14.9% to 128.2, falling below its long-run average for the first time in nearly three years. This decline is particularly pronounced in New South Wales and Victoria, where capital city markets are already experiencing significant price corrections.

These developments underscore the complex economic landscape facing Australian consumers. As cost-of-living pressures intensify and economic uncertainties persist, households are adopting a more cautious approach to spending and financial planning. For individuals and small business owners, staying informed about these trends is crucial for making informed financial decisions in the current environment.
