The timing matters for working Australians. CALI says only about one in three Australians understands the life insurance products and benefits they have, while group policies through super have supported around 54,000 claims in the past year, with almost $6 billion paid. That is a reminder that insurance in super is not a niche feature: for many households, it may be the first layer of financial protection if illness, injury or disability interrupts work.

However, the key message for workers is that cover in super should not be treated as a set-and-forget benefit. Your income, mortgage, dependants, occupation and working hours can all change. So can the level of protection you need. Some members may have income protection automatically, others may need to opt in, and some may have waiting periods, benefit periods or exclusions that do not match their real financial obligations.

This is especially important for self-employed people, contractors, gig workers and those with irregular earnings. Many Australians in these groups do not have the same default super arrangements as employees, which can leave them assuming they have a safety net that is thinner than expected. For them, reviewing super-based cover alongside a standalone income insurance policy can help identify gaps before a claim situation arises.

CALI’s call sits alongside the Federal Government’s Delivering Better Financial Outcomes reforms, which are intended to improve access to limited, practical advice. If implemented effectively, the reforms could make it easier for consumers to ask product providers straightforward questions about their existing policies. That may help close the gap between having cover and actually understanding how it works.

For households, the practical takeaway is simple: do not wait until illness or injury forces the issue. Check whether your super includes income protection, confirm the monthly benefit, waiting period, benefit period and eligibility rules, and compare that against your real expenses. If your work situation is complex, or if you are unsure how super-based cover interacts with personal cover, speaking with a qualified broker or adviser can make the review more useful.

Simple advice may become easier to access, but personal responsibility still matters. Knowing what protection you hold is the first step towards making sure your income, family and lifestyle are not left exposed.
